These are my best guesses partially based on CNN exit poll data.

They said Edwards won whites in South Carolina, but I'm not so sure.

Interestingly, it appears that Obama won whites in New Mexico despite losing the state. Hillary really dominated among Latinos there.

I think a major part of it was due to it being a traditional primary state while many other plains states held caucuses.

sure and so does Virginia interestingly.
That one I really don't understand as well, but Obama only won whites 52-47 in the exit poll.

Personal connections mean a lot in a sparsely populated state with few Democrats. The Clintons’ work for McGovern in 1972 made some enduring relationships and those folks were the head of the SDDP by 2008. Despite the fact that McG himself endorsed Obama!
