Feel this is an interesting question, even if you no longer have dual residency. Mods feel free to move or remove if this isn't related enough to individual politics.

For example, I'm a first-year undergrad at a college in Boston but resided in the 5 years previous to that in New York. I voted in a school board election (my first) in my rural NY town, and then registered in Boston for our mayoral/city council races. For me, I was very engaged volunteering for various campaigns here and wanted to have that work culminate in casting a ballot.

As well, my housing situation in New York has been particularly unstable. I've had 4 addresses there in the past year, and at some points my family had no address. This and the fact my dorm's mail system is pretty subpar (many people on my campus got their 2020 absentee ballots around the inauguration due to mailroom delays) means it would have been quite inconvenient to remain registered in NY.

That said, I'll probably change it back over the summer since I'll be in NY and want to support Jumaane Williams in the governor's primary. I'll probably keep it through the general election too since I anticipate NY-18 being competitive, but once more due to our mail system I may need to get a P.O. Box for the month just to ensure I receive it.

Oh, and then next January my mother is retiring to North Carolina. It will not be surprising to hear I'll almost certainly be on their voter rolls and not Massachusetts' for 2024.

Do you or have you ever had the choice between registration in one state or another? What was your rationale in picking the one you went with?

In college, my parents lived in Montgomery and then Bucks County, but I went to school in Lancaster County. My freshman year, I voted absentee in Montgomery County. Once I got my own apartment in Lanco with my own physical mailing address, I registered to vote there.

Funny enough, I technically did not vote in the 2018 GE because I renewed my license a couple months before, told Penndot not to change my voter registration, and they did anyway. So I had to fill out a provisional ballot because the Department of State had me registered in Bucks County even though I lived (and tried to vote in) Lancaster County. My vote was not counted.

I’m at college on both primary and election days so voting from there.

Plus my congressional district at home is quite safe (everything is, really) and at college not so much. It just makes it more interesting.

When I lived in Williamsburg and later Richmond for school I continued to vote in the 5th district where I now live full time.
