Let’s just hope there isn’t actually substantial organization among these people. Worst case scenario is an existing Trump Shadow Admin that’s attempting to self-fulfill QAnon prophecies. More likely is more incoherent signaling to their deranged base to rile them up for something less sinister.

One of the more potent tools in the terrorist arsenal is the ability to provoke an over-reaction from the state they oppose. By provoking excessive retaliation, either in the form of direct violence directed at sympathetic supporters of the terrorist cause, or crackdowns on the general public that are broadly unpopular, the terrorists discredit the state and stand to gain supporters.

I suspect that this, rather than a Coup Mark II, is what the Republicult intends here. (If the "Republicans" do not wish to be America's foes, then they need to pay very careful attention to what is done and said here, and expel any of their members associated with the Trump  insurgency in any way.)

They're going to have an obnoxious, provocative rally, hint at treason a lot, and hope that they can get counter-protesters (unlikely, the left is broadly smarter than that) or law enforcement (sadly more likely) to kill a bunch of their sacrificial mooks, so that they will have a bloody shirt to wave moving forward. A secondary goal will be to provoke the Biden administration (or any other state or local government body) to crack down on them in the immediate future, so that they can scream "repression" when they're not allowed to preach treason and provoke violence.

There have been plenty of MAGA rallies since then but the ones without Trump have been fairly paltry in turnout and enthusiasm. He, and the timing, made 1/6 the perfect storm that it was.

My guess is it's a combination of two things:

1. He realized that the bulk of Trump supporters aren't secret socialists with economic anxiety.

2. He opposes a right-wing coup, but would actually support a similar coup attempted by a left-wing group. He might not want to look hypocritical if the time comes for a left-wing group to do the same thing.
