https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/exclusive-perus-castillo-plans-technocrat-heavy-cabinet-moderate-economy-role-2021-07-07/

Quote
Socialist Pedro Castillo, expected to be confirmed as Peru's next president, is drawing up a "hybrid" Cabinet of technocrats and political allies, with a moderate in line to run the economy ministry, three sources close to the plans said.

Castillo's center-left adviser, economist Pedro Francke, who told Reuters on Tuesday that he has had dozens of meetings with businesses and investors to reassure them since the June 6 run-off election caused market jitters, is in the driving seat to be named to lead the economy portfolio, said two of the sources.

[...]

Markets could rebound if there were "market-friendly" picks in the Cabinet, Nikhil Sanghani from Capital Economics said in a note last week. "Peru's president-in-waiting Pedro Castillo seems more moderate than many initially feared," he said.

[...]

Francke told Reuters on Tuesday that investors have put aside many of their concerns and he expected to win over mining firms to "prudent" tax reforms needed to bolster social spending on health and education.

Castillo said last weekend that he already has a group of competent people for a cabinet and his priority will be the economy, which has been hit hard by the world's deadliest per capita COVID-19 outbreak.

Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros, a former Peruvian foreign minister who met in recent weeks with Castillo, told Reuters he expected a cabinet that balanced social reforms with economic stability. He did not foresee "ideologically-led" foreign policy.

Yes, this was obvious since the first round for the presidency, and it should have always been obvious given the skilled political staffers and operatives in Peru Libre and the last time a supposed Communistic-leaning individual ran in 2006.

PL is a social democratic party after all, and was always going to govern with hands tied, that was pretty evident given they only called for nationalization of infrastructure and mines along with the “left” having at most 43 seats in the parliament.

Maybe in the next months, the Economist or the Financial Times will have an article like "Pedro Castillo: the Tony Blair of the Andes"

Funny how people can interchange between radical communists and pragmatic moderates so fast. The power of the media, I guess.

His campaign changed it, in this case it wasn't just the media

And  PL was campaigning as an ultra nationalist and openly ML party, with little patience for democratic tradition until a few weeks before the 2nd round

Important of course to remember that Castillo was a member of Alejandro Toledo’s party for much longer than he’s ever been associated with Perú Libre.

Eh not really, outside of slightly changing his rhetoric to not get as badly butchered by the Yellow Liman press, his campaign really didn’t change very much out of the ordinary one might campaign for the second round.

Before the second round, all he was advocating for was nationalization of both transport infrastructure and some resource extraction sites, which in the 70s wasn’t seen as radical in the capitalist economies of the UK or Nordic nations. Nationalization itself is not a Marxist position, and the platform PL ran was weak economism worse than the Gotha Program.

Was always going to be Humala 2.0 at the very best, i.e. lasting an entire term.
