How big would the difference between those of Northwest European descent (i.e. ancestors came from the British Isles, Germany, Scandinavia etc.) and Southern and Eastern European descent (i.e. ancestors came from Italy, Russia, Poland etc.) in terms of voting patterns?

In 1854-1928, NW European = Republican and SE European = Democratic. I don’t think ethnic identity has mattered post-WWII.

Today?

Red, pink and orange (plus Italy) = Republican
Everyone else (minus Turks; not European) = Democratic

All with few exceptions would go Republican. Ancestry today amongst whites means little unlike past.  Although Romney-Clinton supporters probably more likely amongst those in NW quadrant while more Obama-Trump supporters in SE but Trump likely won both but Biden got in 40s and probably won both who have college degrees.  Religiosity, education, and urban vs. Rural not ancestry big drivers for how whites vote.

There's no way in hell white Americans of British origin vote Democratic, unless we mean white Americans born in Europe or white second generation Americans (which makes sense as ethnic origin generally seems to mean less for white Americans, notably this includes Hispanics, the longer a family has been in the United States).

Maybe you might have a case if limited to New England Yankees (although even then its doubtful because of Mormons and rural areas in the Upper Midwest) but Borderlanders/Scotch-Irish and English descent people in the South are overwhelmingly Republican nowadays.

Also I strongly suspect German and Dutch Americans vote more R than Polish Americans.

Dutch might be highest R of any ancestry group (besides "American" and "Scots-Irish"), I suspect German is up there too.

This is exactly what I was implying, which I suppose I should have described in more detail. Beyond a couple of generations, things like "British-American" mean absolutely nothing in terms of breaking down voting patterns. The same can be said for most Western European groups, given they do tend to integrate very quickly. Even their ancestors were prone to this, as America more or less began with a large majority of Western-Euro population that homogenized more rapidly. The further east you go, the smaller the representation and the longer it has taken for groups to integrate culturally and politically (with some exceptions both culturally and politically). This is why you can find segments of the US that have distinctly old-world yet integrated cultures (think German and Scandinavian), yet further eastward into Europe, you can still find effectively segmented urban US environments where cultural traditions are far stronger; there's really no comparable dynamic in the US for western nations these days.

Whichever way the Scots Irish vote is the opposite of the way the Yankees vote. The rest is noise.

In the Northeast, Italians are probably more R than Yankees/WASPs.  But overall probably not given that Italian Americans are more metropolitan and more concentrated in more liberal states.

I think those of English descent definitely voted for Trump, but I suspect the biggest swing towards Dems was probably amongst this group due to simple fact most likely to have above average incomes and college degrees.  By contrast groups like Polish, Italian, Slovak, Hungarian, Slovenian, & Greek, I would not be surprised if Obama won those but then Trump won them both times.  Even amongst Scandinavians, I believe Obama was more competitive than either Clinton or Biden.  Finnish-Americans pretty sure Obama won in 2008, while Trump won both times.  For Portuguese-Americans, probably went Democrat both times, but guessing Romney & McCain only got in 30s here, while Trump probably got in 40s.  Dutch-Americans though looking at Michigan went heavily for Trump, but strong swing towards Biden.  Romney probably got close to 70% amongst them while Trump more around 60%.

I think all whites in general, regardless of ancestry, vote Republican, with the Irish being the least so. Now when you break it down by education, marital status, location etc, you might see some deviations. But as others have said, these distinctions don't matter anymore.
