Congressman's Sri Lanka trip questioned

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- A trip to Sri Lanka by U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., reportedly paid for by a terrorist group, is under investigation, sources tell the Chicago Tribune.

The 7-day journey by Davis and an aide last year was said to have been funded by the Tamil Tigers, a group the U.S. government designated as a terrorist organization, the Tribune said.

The trip came under scrutiny after 11 supporters of the organization were arrested in an alleged conspiracy to aid the terrorist group through money laundering, arms procurement and bribery.

Davis, a five-term congressman, said he thought the trip was paid for by a Tamil cultural organization, the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America, based in Hickory Hills, Ill.

During the visit, Davis said he spent most of his time in a region controlled by the Tigers, a separatist group seeking an independent state for 3.2 million ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Finally, now Dick Cheney will have a direct link between the Democrats and terror! Smiley

Danny Davis? Say no more, say no more...

Who is he?  Now let me guess -- he represents an inner city district?

Congressman for an inner city Chicago district. He's not part of The Machine and as such is a kook.
He also has strong links with the Moonies IIRC.

Many Tamil groups do have ties to the Tigers but if one is not aware of that and does unknowlingly interact with such a group, I don't think they should be instantly condemned. After all, many Irish-American groups had ties to the IRA, and no doubt many Irish Americans unknowingly interacted with them, but that doesn't deserve blanket condemnation.

And hey, I'd rather have them spend their money on giving people tours than on more weapons and bombs.

Odd.  I thought the moonies were hardcore republicans (or at least hardcore Bush supporters - a la the moonie owned Washington times).

My congressman (Peter King) is probably the strongest supporter of the IRA in Congress

Dave

Well yeah, but the US government is sick in the membrane on these issues, and its classifications have a reality predicting value of 0. Essentially.

Well not quite. Groups not listed are *probably* not terrorist, but actually being listed proves exactly nothing.

Well Canada, India and just about every EU country agree in this case. But otherwise you're correct that the list is kind of random and not the best classification. You have some Greek leftist groups on there that are basically just responsible for a couple arsons, when various militant groups responsible for a hell of a lot more death and destruction not included.

To give an example: How many African groups are listed?

Three. And they're all in northern Africa, two Algerian Islamist groups (one of which is more or less defunct) and one Egyptian Islamist one. Not a single one from Sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa is full of groups I'm sure we can all agree aren't a very positive force, in fact I could probably make a list from that region alone that would be larger than the current list (which is 44)
