Anyone else heard about this?

As I was looking into this, it struck me that the Saudis are trying to build their own Hong Kong. They've positioned this enormous project right at the mouth of the Red Sea, meaning that the ports for this city will service ships heading through the Suez Canal. The planned city is being advertised as "modern" and "progressive," and the Saudis are setting it up as a special economic zone that will have its own legal system-- which is clearly meant to attract foreign investors who are afraid of putting their money into a brutal dictatorship. The road connection to Egypt would be the sole land passageway from the Middle East into Africa, bypassing Israel. The linear plan, though somewhat absurd, would definitely succeed in making high-speed transit faster and more efficient.

Others, however, think that this is an ambitious plan to minimize casualties in the event of a nuclear attack from Iran. The city is being built as far from Iran as possible, and its linear nature and underground levels will serve to spread out and shield the population from an ICBM strike. I thought this was an interesting explanation for this; obviously it's not the only reason behind the project, but it's probably a big one.

What are Atlas' thoughts on this?

If the purpose of the project is to hive off a city-statelet to attract foreign investors under a more solid legal system, then it's already DOA. As real-life Hong Kong indicates, you can't expect a tyrannical regime to abide by a promise to respect civil liberties and the rule of law in just a sliver of its territory in the long run.

If they have so much money to waste on that useless crap, you’d think they have no problems with inequality at all. One quarter of Saudis live under poverty line.

Besides, it’s a horrible idea. What kind of evil person would want to live in a city that is basically a 170km street?

Why the rich have to be like this?

Sure but I wonder after everything is constructed, what kind of people will live there? It’s not a very practical project.

I’m used to see white elephants that occupy one square of the neighborhood, but one that extends to 170km?

There’s one neighborhood in my city that is basically a 15km line and it’s by far the worst place to move around, you take a lot of time to go to the places around. And that’s where the rich people choose to live, in closed condominiums distant from more crowded neighborhoods where people are. All of them have cars, which facilitate their life, but they sometimes have small markets and all the stuff they need to live inside these condominiums, so they don’t even have to leave it.

I am imagining something with a similar logic but 11 times worse. It’s designed to make people stay away from each other.
