I recently heard someone define left vs. right in terms of media networks/outlets as follows:

A left-leaning media network/outlet is willing to hold people in power accountable at every turn, regardless of their political affiliation. Using this definition, MSNBC would not be considered left-leaning enough as it does not do enough to call out the mistakes/flaws of establishment Democratic politicians.

A right-leaning media network/outlet is extremely sycophantic to a specific individual/group/cause. Using this definition, Fox News would not be considered right-leaning enough because it declared that Trump lost the election without doing enough to appeal to disaffected Trump supporters to try to get their candidate back in power.

What do you guys think about this definition?

That's obviously a highly tendentious definition. I agree that MSNBC is not left-wing, of course, but that's not the reason why.

Why even have words? Just make noises and let people interpret them however they want.
