...beyond signaling the user's ideological allegiance? Why are they superior to (or functionally distinct from) terms like "developed" and "developing", or "upper income" and "lower income" when discussing comparative development?

"Imperial core" is one of those expressions that are like red flags that I should not take what I'm reading seriously, like "LGBT agenda/ideology" or "cultural Marxism".

Do you really call us* crimson instead of maroon?

I'd comfortably say that the term maroon had entirely left my mind, and that crimson 'twas all that remained. In any case, the term may or may not literally fit with the avatar color, but it certainly has the right connotations, IMO.

I’m usually referring it to the combined, interconnected blocs of NATO, CANZUK, the EU—give or take a few countries.

Periphery can refer to anything outside of that.

Well it has its uses in a geographical sense.

My usage of "core" and "periphery" in a geographical sense is more like Parioli/Westminster = core and Ostia/Orpington = periphery.

Isn’t Ostia incredibly gentrified at this point? It can hardly be called the periphery anymore.

I don't know but every time Ostia is in the news is because transportation sucks ass or something. It sounds like the last place one would want to gentrify lmao. In any case you can substitute it with Tor Bella Monaca or others, you get what I mean.

perso would have thought that it's like Paris is the core and like Mazières-en-Gâtine is the periphery - you know, as an outline of where political or economic power within a particular polity is located. I think it's a pretty useful term

Yah man play Vicky 2; using events to get cores on regions is a major gameplay mechanic because it's how you can justify wars and up your prestige to become a Great Power

It can be crudely useful in some geographic and economic applications, I guess.

There are subjects of discussion for which the terms are useful, but using them consistently for every subject of discussion is only useful in terms of what it reveals about the ideology of the speaker.

You just don't get it; I called Nicaragua a "peripheral state," so in order to respond to my argument you're going to have to read up on 3,000 pages of development theory articles and phrase your response using the same academic vocabulary as me. Otherwise you're clearly uninformed and I won't bother listening.

It’s a more useful and accurate term than “Developing“ or “Third World” country tbh.

I find it useful in provinces/countries dominated by a single large city. E.g. Manitoba.
