This came up in the Devos' Track in the polls thread.  So I'm curious what you all think.  Personally I think it would help Granholm about 3-4%--so option2

DeVos is a weak, boring speaker where as Granholm is the opposite. I think Granholm will easily take down DeVos. However, I don't think that these debates will seal the elections given the overall problems facign Michigan. I'll say between 2-5% boost for Granholm.

To answer both of your questions:
I don't think they have decided on a debate--this poll was hypothetical (sorry if it caused confusion)

As to the r.m.--I don't think he's picked one yet--and I haven't heard any rumors.

State Senator Nancy Cassis (Novi)  who was running for governor but dropped out last fall,  has been hinted a few times as a possible running mate.  She balances the ticket too. He could  go another way with State Senator Shirley Johnson (Royal Oak) but she is pro abortion and moderate. (I'm assuming it will be a woman). At the debates I think DeVos could do good it dependson how he handles all the questionable Amway practices.

But how would Amway come up--what kind of rebuttal would she have?

Granholm is more charismatic, and thus will benefit from the debates. I'm not sure it'll be a huge plus, however, as the gubernatorial debates don't really draw a huge audience I don't believe. As best I can remember only PBS stations carried the 2002 Gubernatorial debates.

The Lt. Governor is picked at the state convention, which is usually held in late August. Devos isn't even officially the nominee yet until he wins the primary on August 8.

The running mate is picked by the convention, not by Devos, although obviously if he expressed a preference for a running mate, the delegates would be likely to back his choice.

Right, but I mean--we all know he won, and will probably get his way, unless he picks someone like Fieger.  I'll work on finding some possible r.m.'s.

Mr. DeVos will be put in a position to tell us how he will bring jobs to MI that pay well.  He will be asked about outsourcing which will be difficult for him to explain as he has done it (or a form of it).  He will try to say that we are now in a new age of a global economy, etc, but that will be a hard sell.

He will be asked how he would improve education, but his Great Lakes Education Foundation's purpose is to promote school vouchers and undermine public schools and the pay of teachers.  The unpopularity of this agenda was the massive failure of his 2000 voucher proposal.

I don't think that the debate will help the Governor as much as it may hurt fence sitters who may have thought about voting for DeVos.

On out local news, our local news anchor interviewed Mr. DeVos a while back.  He really pinned him down as to how a billionaire can relate to the average person.  Of all of the things we discuss here, this may hurt him the most in the end.  We must not overlook the fact that people vote for those they can relate to.

Before somebody says that Kerry was a rich man too, he had the Democratic Party which claims to have the interest of the lower/middle class to back him up (true or not).  DeVos+Republican=the other half, will be a big problem for him to overcome.  Weather or not this is accurate, or the views of anybody here, or not, that will just plain be a problem for him.  Period.

The latest Rasumussen polling with the Governor slighty ahead, stated that Michigan people trust Democrats more than Republicans on every issue that they poll about.  This was especially true on the economy, his big issue.

My question is this.  If Dick DeVos truly wants to be governor, which issue is he going to be more like a Democrat in order to win?

We must also not forget that John Kerry received more votes than any other candidate in the history of the state of MI.  Which Kerry voters will break for DeVos in the end?  Especially if DeVos's support for President Bush becomes well known.

He will have to talk his way out of right wing idiology if he wants to win.

I agree w/ you here--he isn't very easy to relate too, and the President's standing w/ Michiganders will hurt him.  If he wants to win, the Pres. needs to raise is a.r.
