Rhode Island Republicans have traditionally cut their party's elected officials a lot of slack.

Generally, Rhode Island Republicans tend to be somewhat more liberal than Republicans nationwide.

Rhode Island Republicans are acutely aware of their minority status.

So, generally they have supported nominees even well to the left of their preferences on the grounds that the nominee is more electable and will vote their way 'most' (over half) of the time.

However, Lincoln Chafee has broken the bond.  His recent series of votes on amendments to the immigration bill have outraged his constituents who are increasingly supporting Lafferty for the nomination.

Now, most Republicans don't think that Lafferty is likey to be elected if nominated, but, Chaffee is, in their mind, no better that either of his prospective Democrat opponents, so there is no loss there.

However, by defeating Chaffee in the primary they will send a signal that there is a difference between tolerating independence and endorsing insolence.

Bye-bye, Lincoln.

Chafee will win the primary but I'm starting to sense that the problems for the GOP nationally will bring him down in the General.

Nah, he'll cling on. His margins might not be all that high, but they'll be higher than Snarlin Arlen's.

But he's still winning.

Honestly, I hope you're right -- a Laffey primary win is an EASY democratic pickup; probably a 20 point victory for Lighthouse (or whoever the guy is, his name eludes me now).  But Chafee has a decided edge in the primary.  The nonpragmaticconservative base isn't very large in Rhode Island.

Hello Democratic pickup.

All being well Smiley. When control of the Senate is at stake, a Republican is still a Republican liberal or not

It might be profitable for him to switch to the DNC if he feels he will lose.

I wouldn't celebrate this, since his loss in the primary means a guaranteed Democratic pick up.

If Chafee loses the primary, the Dems take the seat by 20 points.

If Chafee wins the primary, tossup.

Yes, please punish Chafee and the Democratic Party by making Laffey your candidate.  That will show us.

If a moderate Republican can't even win in Rhode Island, it really shows how extreme the Republican party has gotten.

Steve Laffey is a moderate. Chafee is not a moderate, but a leftist little different than Carl Levin.

Chaffee is a "moderate", but not really a "moderate Republican". He's a Liberal Republican, please.
