"Conservatism is the politics of prudence, which begins with acceptance of the fact that, more often than not, and to a degree that is humbling to mere human beings, the inertia of history and society severely limits both the pace and degree of change that human willfulness can bring about. Or, as a wise man once said, in a battle between you and the world, bet on the world." -- George F. Will, "The New Season," published 1987.

It's actually good argument for "oh, well".

I feel it's more than a little bit misplaced to associate Conservatism with things like "prudence" or "stability" or whatever considering that the most radical and disruptive economic policies of the last 4 odd decades have all been passed in the name of a nominally Conservative ideology

The debate here would be whether those conservatives were hypocrites or self-serving more than they were ideologically driven or if conservatism itself needs a redefinition.

In terms of contemporary American politics, an ideology designed to favor white men over just about all other demographic groups.

Rik Mehta, who is running in NJ would disagree with you.

I think Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were ideologically driven. Their economic policies were particularly disruptive and arguably more aggressive than the policies of preceding conservatives. Certainly they inaugurated a new era dominated by economic neoliberalism and rugged individualism, redefining the notion of "consrrvatism".

I have always associated conservatism with the preservation of social and economic order, as well as the privileges or advantages of the social groups favoured by said order.

On a side note, Trump is not a conservative. He is something worse (I'll call him trumpista, or heir of Caligula)

Depending on how charitable I'm feeling I think of either risk-averse people interested in promoting stability or small-minded types absolutely terrified of everything around them.
