It's true, regardless of what your thoughts on the exact drinking age are.

That's literally the reason why every country has drinking age and we don't give four-year-olds liqueur. However, it's a pretty bad argument for putting the age at 21 instead of 18. Voted HP (D) because I think you're getting at the latter point.

This basically.

Got to give darklordoftech credit for still going to bat on this issue even though he's 25 (IIRC from some previous post.) For almost everyone it's something they really moan about until they're 21 and then hardly ever talk about ever again.

And you’re correct.

I think the truth and living in reality is important. I’ll defend the Clintons against claims that the Iraq War was actually their war, that there’s no difference between them and Bush 43/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz, that they murdered Vince Foster, that the Waco Seige was a mass murder, etc.

It's about drunk driving too, so I disagree. Drunk driving can hurt other people lives too or cost their lives, while brain development is your own responsability.

the drinking age is about over protective adults.

They may use different excuses at different times and they may argue about what the excuse is this decade, but it's always about the paternalistic attitudes we have towards young people.

(I'm not judging (at least in this post) whether that's a good idea or not)

edit-and as I always like to point out, most people under 21 can drink legally in the US with consent of their parents.

My opinion is that the drinking age should be the same as the age of majority, because it is about being mature enough to be treated as self-responsible by society at-large.
I also believe that the age of majority at 18 is an excellent choice.

Concerning drunk driving, in Germany, the legal drinking age for beer and wine is 16 (18 for "hard alcohol"), and I think that is the appropriate age to prevent drunk driving.

You're allowed to drive at the age of 17 in companion with one parent and at 18 alone. Most teenagers have been heavily drunk before they had driven a car. They know what an alcohol intoxication does to themselves.

In high school, we had some exchange students from Pennsylvania. They were a year older than we were (18 to 17), but the German students were much more controlled when they consumed alcohol because they knew their bodily reaction better than the American students who had never been drunk before.

But of course, this is anecdotal evidence

Lower it to 19.  It's silly that I lived on my own for 2 years before I could drink "legally".

Here in the UK we start injecting cider into our eyeballs when we are seven years old (I stole that saying from elsewhere) so the drinking age over there is a little odd to us.  Smile

Shame that we have such a car-centered culture that this is an issue. Also the high drinking age means a lot of people who start drinking as teenagers do so in an unsafe manner. I'm sure everyone that grew up in a rural area remembers field parties with containers full of warm beer cans and drunk driving definitely happened. So it doesn't stop underage drinking, it just makes it more dangerous.

Lock him up!  Wink + Tongue

More seriously, there are alternatives to Uber. It's just that Uber's current model ain't sustainable. It priced itself below cost to gain market share rapidly in hopes of preventing competitors from lyfting their idea and to get people switching from taxis.
