Recently my friend has been really getting me into chess.  It's not as complicated as I thought it was when I first learned the rules in grade school, but chess.com tells you where you can move your pieces anyway, so you don't have to memorize which piece does what and it's easier to learn that way.

As a novice I'm not great at it but when I started playing I was immediately hooked.  My chess.com name is ascott1994 if anyone wants to send me a challenge.  Just allow a reasonable time frame (~3 days) for each turn.

Sort of.  I played quite a bit of chess in 7th grade, but not much since then, and I’m far from the greatest.  I still like it, maybe I could get back into it sometime.

While I was in the club in 3rd grade, I'm not much of a fan. I'll play it to pass time...but ultimately, a game where every move can be seen just like that without the element of surprise is just not the sort of game I'd turn to.

I admit that I used to have Chessmaster for my PC growing up, and along with variety of sets and classical music background...it was a pretty good time.

Its something I become obsessed with for a few weeks every once in a while, chess.com does make things a lot easier and also lets me play on my phone when I'm bored in a lecture.

The same for me, literally.

I like to play, but I'm pretty bad at it and it discourages me from playing more often.

I play it and know the rules, but I'm not particularly good at it. Sad

Ex chess player here. I played for 3-4 years. I was in the top 10 FIDE ranking in my province for my age group. I won Gary Kasparov's autograph on a poster of him as well.

I used to be able to play chess okay, and I do have a Chess.com account, under the name postgeek49.

I'd be delighted to take your challenge.

I used to enjoy chess, but I'm also aware I'm an inferior player, to put it mildly.

Sometimes. I like inventing my own chess+ games.

For instance, in portal chess, you start out each on a different board and one corner is the teleportation portal to the other board. In multilevel chess, getting all the way to the other side puts you up to the next level, and the first person to get [the king, any piece, all pieces, whatever] to the third level wins.

Had a peak rating of 1005 on chess.com but I'm probably more of a 700-800 now.

The five stages of proficiency in the novice to expert model are:
novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert.

Have not played in sometime now, but I would classify myself as "competent."
The problem with (playing a game with) me, is that it takes so long for me to make a move. So I avoid playing with others (because they will strangle me), and instead play against the computer.

In some ways though you are better off playing against real players than an AI program, even on easy mode.

I played seriously when I was young and was pretty good (peak USCF rating in the 1900s).  But I just kind of lost interest in it over time, and haven't really played a game in years.

I know the rules, but it's been decades since I last seriously played.

A 1900 USCF rating is excellent!  I played a lot in high school--we had a very good chess program and we did well in state tournaments.   But I couldn't crack a rating of 1600 and just play occasionally these days.

I'm horrible, my brain doesn't do well at strategy stuff, I'm not good at thinking past my current move. Plus I never remember the rules. I have massive respect for people who are good at it, but I'm more of a Trivial Pursuit kinda guy.

Yes. I'm mathstatman on chess.com. My rating is around 1200, mostly for 20-minute games (10 minutes per side).

Yes--- was in the High School Chess Club back in the late '80s / early '90s where we placed 2nd in State only narrowly beaten by the #1 Chess Club in the State...

Did Tournaments as well and all that and believe my USCF rating hit something like 1750 before I stopped doing tournaments when I went to College....

Still play sometimes... maybe should consider an online game sometime, but it's almost not the same without a cup of coffee and a lengthy game without the pressure of "speed chess", which is very different than a regulation clocked chess game...
