Opinion of homeowners associations

HOAs are good, but can quickly become bad if the wrong kinds of overbearing tinpot dictators get in charge of them.  You all know exactly who I'm talking about.  Karen from the cul-de-sac who wants to flex by calling you every time your kids leave sports equipment in the driveway, but couldn't care less about her buddy parking his boat in the front lawn even though it makes the neighborhood look 10x more trashy.

There's nothing wrong with wanting some sort of local organization to ensure cohesion and organization in the neighborhood though.  We all benefit from not having every house try to plant its own unique kind of grass until the neighborhood looks like a patchwork quilt.

While the sentiment is understandable I fail to see how this point in particular matters.

It's the kind of minor thing that HOAs should actually be doing.  Keeping the neighborhood cohesive in a way that benefits the whole and preventing people from abusing common resources.

insane that Americans brag about how free they are, yet willlingly stay under the diktats of petty would be dictators who demand your lawn have only this species of grass or whatever. And I say that as a Brit.
