Explicit sex usually has an X rating, yet extreme violence is usually rated R.

Does anyone else find this ridiculous?

I'd rather my child be a sex pervert than a murderer.

uhhhhh . . . ok?  Kids under the age of 17 should not be watching R-rated movies unless with adult supervision.

There is not an X rating anymore.  Most of those were reduced to R.  There is an NC-17 rating, though.  It can be reached through either violence or sex.  However, typically movies that get NC-17 for violence tone it down.  NC-17 movies for sex are a niche market.

If you want a good example of this, consider this.  It was discovered that, with the "Hot Coffee" mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the protagonist could enter into a minigame, following a date with a girlfriend once his relationship with that girl is good enough, in which they have explicit sex.  This made the game receive an "Adults Only" rating, which was knocked back down to a "Mature" rating once the developer removed this minigame.  Now, had the protagonist murdered his girlfriend instead of having sex with her, even if the murder had been in as explicit a manner, it would only have received a "Mature" rating.

Yes, I agree that this is ridiculous.  You can murder a woman, but god forbid you have sex with the woman.

That's something for each childs parent to decide.

Then the only person the parent can blame then is themselves.

Keep that in mind, nclib.

I really do think you are generalising.  Some of us under-17 folks are perfectly capable of watching most anything without adult supervision.

The "NC" in NC-17 stands for "No Children".  Absolutely no one under 17 is allowed into any NC-17 movie.  Conversely, children can go to movies that are R-rated if they have someone 18 or older with them who says it's okay.  Simply putting explicit sex in a movie will get it an NC-17 rating, but having tons of violence will probably only get it an R rating unless it's mind-blowingly gory.  In other words, the MPAA is saying that no children should be allowed to see sex under any circumstances, but that it's okay for children to see violence as long as their parent is okay with it.

Really, does this make any sense at all?

How would anyone, youth or adult, be a 'pervert' for having sexual interests and drives?  Such is quite normal.

Both are horrible and I would wish my child to be NEITHER.

He said he would prefer his child be a sex pervert to being a murderer.  This is like saying that you would prefer getting shot in the leg to having an advanced form of AIDS.  The fact that you consider the latter worse does not mean that you eagerly desire the former.

If given a choice only between having your child being a pervert and being a murderer, such that you had to pick between the two and could not have your child be neither, which would you prefer?

Interesting question.
Explicit sex movies get a XXX rating. Those show in graphic detail every imaginable type of sex act, and probably some that most folks never imagined. Should a movie like that get the same rating as one that shows graphic violence? If so what should the rating be? Should movies such as the Terminator be rated the same as say DeepThroat. If we say yes then either both types of movies would be allowed on commercial TV or neither type would. Thats a bit of a dilema. On the one hand, DeepThroat playing on prime time TV doesn't seem right. On the other hand, no more Schwarzenegger movies? Arghh!

How about we abolish ratings and let people play whatever they want on TV without censorship?
