The SD Democratic Party closed the last two offices in the state last year. Can they beat Gov. Noem and Sen. Thune in 2022 or are the SD Democratic Party shut out for a long time, electorally?

I'm not a fan of retreads or candidates getting rematches, but I did see a Billie Sutton TV interview once and if anyone deserves a rematch he does.

It's tragic to see the state party in such a dire state when Democrats came so close to winning the Gubernatorial race in 2018. I really loved Sutton!

Perhaps Billie Sutton, or another high profile Democrat, could defeat Kristi Noem in 2022 if she is unpopular at that point. I could see that happening.

As for federal office, Democrats won't win anytime soon. I don't think there will be a competitive U.S. House or U.S. Senate race in South Dakota for a long time.

I don’t see it happening. It would take decades to rebuild and actually compete with the Republicans in the Great Plains, much less South Dakota.

South Dakota doesn't deserve him. I think he should run again in 2022, but if Biden is President though taht might doom him regardless of how unpopular Noem is

Happy SD Farmer Swing Voters, Election Day 2022:

"Our state government may be inept and its actions have allowed 1/4 of our population to die, but... gosh diddly darn it! We need to send a message to the White House! A vote for Billie is a vote for Biden!"

The problem is there just aren't enough votes there for Sutton (probably the only viable statewide candidate) to pick up.

Sutton lost by 11.5K. The obvious place to look for votes is in Minnehaha where 40K registered voters sat out in 2018. But if you change the vote totals to resemble 2016 turnout while new voters have the same margin as the 2018 voters, then Sutton only nets ~600 votes.

Noem's abysmal handling of COVID maybe will be helpful here, if it's remembered in any meaningful way by 2022, but even still meat packers aren't really sympathetic statewide (for... obvious reasons).

I'm curious to see if there are any votes you could pick up in Watertown. It seems demographically like the type of small city filled with disproportionately many (for SD) college educated voters but Codington County was Noem+11. Even still if you managed to draw it to 50-50 you'd still only negate ~1K votes.

Sutton can try, but I cannot see the SD Dems winning even the downballot statewide offices anytime soon.

When's the last time the SD Dems held both chambers of the legislature ?

1973/1974

Controlled the House by one seat while the senate was tied, but the Lt. Governor was a Democrat.

Both North Dakota and South Dakota, despite their persistent support for the GOP National Ticket, have continued to support Democrats for Governor and Senator until rather recently.

George McGovern built SD's Democratic party in the 1950s.  He ran against Republican Senator Karl Mundt in 1960 and barely lost, then was elected in 1962.  He doggedly worked the entire state practicing the most basic of retail politics and SD has a Democratic Governor and two (2) Democratic Senators at the end of 1972.

I actually knew a guy who worked on the long-forgotten campaign of Archie Gubbrud who was a former Governor of SD.  He ran against McGovern in 1968 and lost.  Gubbrud became head of the Farmers' Home Administration as a "Thank You" for running.  McGovern's Presidential campaign permanently clouded his constituents view of him.  He spanked Gubbrud pretty good in 1968, a decent Republican year, but he barely beat ex-POW Leo Thorsness in 1974, a mega-Republican year.

Last supporting Democrats for Governor 30-40 years ago isn’t recent by any stretch of the imagination

True

The Dakotas haven't elected Democratic governors in decades (SD in 1974 I believe and ND in 1988), but both had 2 Democratic senators until recently (as recently as 2004 for SD and 2010 for ND), and they last elected a Democrat to the Senate as recently as 2008 in SD's case and 2012 in ND's case.

So that's recent.
