For the first time, hospitals and insurers would be forced to disclose their secret negotiated rates under a far-reaching plan released Friday by the Trump administration.

Administration officials said the final rule will compel hospitals in 2021 to publicize the rates they negotiate with individual insurers for all services, including drugs, supplies, facility fees and care by doctors who work for the facility.

This would be a huge step forward if it survives the inevitable legal challenges.

Because of course, most people have plenty of time to research price information and make an informed decision before going to a hospital. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good idea, but the idea that this'll be a panacea for health care costs is ludicrous.
