Why does the election that picks the “leader of the free world” have a lower voter turnout than elections in other countries?

For decades, education has been lacking and that lacking has even been somewhat encouraged.

If every American was an educated citizen capable of free, independent thought we'd have less leaders like Donald Trump.

I did a paper on this my sophmore year of college. The main reasons I identified were demographics (age, education, etc.) and factors related to voting (having to re-register if you move, the location of someone's polling place, etc.)

The Electoral College is likely to blame to some extent. For example, I know my vote for President doesn't really matter because if South Carolina ever were in the position of being close, the Democrats would've already won the national race elsewhere. So for Americans in deep red or deep blue States there's less incentive to vote for President. My State Senate district is purple, but only the politically active will be aware of it.

Too much money for campaigns. Politicans want you to donate to their campaign,  but you cant file it as interest, when you are doing your taxes, and break all their promises when they become Prez. That's why EC college and the filibuster need reforms.  Newt Gingrich said that when he became Speaker, he was gonna pass term limits, nothing happened

It's probably worth a longer and more complex answer, but to name a few points: Distrust in the political system and process, a lack of political education and voter registration issues.

There is a certain irony that a vote belonging to a Republican in Vermont or a Democrat in Wyoming actually counts much less (that is; zero) than if it counted towards a national popular vote among an electorate of ~250 million.

the two party system isn't satisfactory to a good number of Americans who fail to see the point in voting for two different evils or wasting their vote on a third party (if it's even an option in your state)

Because the United States has to be "exceptional" in all the worst ways.
