Americans were fighting in the middle east, but most people's daily lives were affected unless they directly knew someone in uniform.

By this standard literally every election since 1944 was a wartime election.  In practice, the only presidential elections post-WWII when "wartime" was even close to the #1 issue for voters were 1968 and 2004.  War and peace trails the economy as a voting issue in presidential elections unless the conflict is seen as particularly severe.  For whatever reason, there have been more midterms that emphasized "wartime" issues.  You could reasonably put 2006, 2002, 1970, 1966, 1962 (Cuban Missile Crisis), and 1950 on the list.
