Lucas: “Everybody said, “Oh, well, there was a war between the Jedi and the Sith.” Well, that never happened. That’s just made up by fans or somebody. What really happened is, the Sith ruled the universe for a while, 2,000 years ago. Each Sith has an apprentice, but the problem was, each Sith Lord got to be powerful. And the Sith Lords would try to kill each other because they all wanted to be the most powerful. So in the end they killed each other off, and there wasn’t anything left. So the idea is that when you have a Sith Lord, and he has an apprentice, the apprentice is always trying to recruit somebody to join him — because he’s not strong enough, usually — so that he can kill his master.

That’s why I call it a Rule of Two — there’s only two Sith Lords. There can’t be any more because they kill each other. They’re not smart enough to realize that if they do that, they’re going to wipe themselves out. Which is exactly what they did.”

Is almost an exact summary of why the Sith lost the Great Hyperspace Wars, Great Sith, Jedi Civil War , Darth Vitiate Wars,  New Sith Wars.

The stronger Sith many times would be defeated by a group of weaker siths who ganged up on him to try to take his place. Eventually this made it easier for the Jedi to defeat the Sith(Even though during the New Sith Wars it took 1000 years to so).

The Rule of Two ensured only the Stronger Sith was the Master so the Sith got stronger each time an apprentice killed their Master

I always hated this idea. I would rather see an all-out Sith Order in opposition to the Jedi's. They can still back-stab and manipulate, but it's no wonder that the Sith were nearly extinct for so long. This system is worse than the electoral college!

I don't. Actually, given the chaotic nature of The Sith, this forced in rule forces [pun unintended] the writers to create new ways of spreading the dark-side.

You can have Masters cheat the system by killing off apprentices just to keep the power, you can have The Apprentice train another apprentice as a way to take out The Master, and so on and so on. And you can have The No True Scotsman thing going on.

And it's a very logical conclusion.

The Jedi vs Sith conflict isn't just Good vs Evil, if it were, Anakin never would've fallen.

The Sith lost every war with that type of order from 5000BBY(Beginning of Great Hyperspace War ) to 1000 BBY(end of New Sith Wars).

Bane’s rule of two actually worked
