Hopefully this will serve as a lesson to all Bishops that they need to crack down hard or face the consequences.

Unfortunately for a Catholic diocese this isn't a severe consequence. Filing bankruptcy is actually a good thing in getting debts discharged. However it has severe negative impacts, for an individual it means a massive credit score hit and inability or extreme difficulty in getting many types of loans for seven years, for a business it could mean forced liquidation or at least difficulty getting lines of credit needing to continue. A Catholic diocese however could always just be bailed out by the Vatican or wealthy donors and doesn't really need access to credit.

But this is just another in a very very long list of reasons I could never be Catholic, I wouldn't be willing to donate one dime to something like this. And yes, I would quit my church if it was facing credible lawsuits over sexual abuse.

If you would have named a diocese in the US I'd be least surprised to see this happen to, it would be Rochester.

Rochester has long been an extreme outlier (in a bad way) when it comes to vocations, retention rates, etc (although unfortunately I can't dig up the data). So much so that there was clearly a lot wrong with the place. I've heard the current bishop is much better though.

This is a particularly concerning possibility given the political leanings and reputations of the specific bishops who were in charge in Upstate New York for much of the relevant period.
