Inslee ramps up pressure campaign for DNC to hold climate change debate, says earth’s ‘on fire’

Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee is stepping up his push to force the Democratic National Committee to hold a primary debate solely on the issue of climate change.

“This planet is on fire and we have to have a debate on how to put it out,” the Democratic presidential candidate and longtime champion of combating climate change told reporters.

And Inslee warned that if the DNC doesn’t drop its opposition to a climate change-only debate, he will “be talking to the other candidates” who agree with him and “we will pursue what other options we can make.”

Inslee made his comments Wednesday while campaigning in New Hampshire, which holds the first primary in the race for the White House.

Inslee, a long-shot for the nomination in an historically large field of two-dozen candidates, has been aggressively and relentlessly urging the DNC and the national party committee’s chairman Tom Perez to hold a climate change debate.

Badly needed in times of Greta Thunberg's climate strikes. Otherwise, climate change is only talked about for 5 minutes in each debate.

He's in no position to make demands.

Maybe he and several others are, who will dump the DNC and do their own debate thing instead ?

Inslee's only chance at the nomination is if climate change becomes a major issue in the primaries.  I like the guy, but he has almost zero chance at getting the nomination because I don't see climate change as a galvanizing issue for 2020.

Admittedly, part of the reason why I support Sanders is to purge the cronyists and appeasers like Perez and Neera Tanden.

Is climate change that much more important than other issue that it needs it's own debate? I would be more interested in a debate about tax policy. Or a debate about military spending.  Or a debate about the deficit. Or a debate about shoring up Social Security and Medicare. Not saying climate change isn't important but it is not the only issue.

If we were to have single issue debates I'd think health care and education are more worthy ones to have. Honestly I'm not sure a climate change would even be insightful since everyone is on the same page. Where on health care a lot of candidates have fundamentally different views, I'd love to see a debate between single payer and a public option.

It would be a waste of time. All of them pretty much are in agreement about climate change.

It is certainly a crucial issue as is gun violence. Also military spending, which is obviously too high, should be an issue (and it is with Gravel).

I am intrigued by the idea but think, if it happened, it probably wouldn't go well. It's a great idea to have a forum for trying to communicate ideas and make voters aware of potential solutions but the format seems like it would be prone to grandstanding and emphasizing style/flashy proposals over substance (most of which is pretty wonky and not easily accessible to the many voters). Also viewership would be pitifully low.

But I appreciate the suggestion and this is smart for Inslee to advocate for.

edit: One thing I do like about the idea of a climate debate is it would be great to have somebody other than the candidates be involved in talking about consequences of climate change. Detailed questions on specific issues, e.g., how agriculture can be protected from extreme weather, would be a great way to get voters to think critically about specific and far-reaching impacts rather than a vague specter of an idea. Answers would probably not be very helpful though.

Inslee is extremely underrated strictly because he picked the best hill to die on. We need every single candidate to release detailed plans to address climate change. Every candidate needs to talk about climate change like it's a legitimate threat to our way of life.
