NPR Morning Edition with Bob Edwards, and guest: UAC Secretary Nation.

Edwards: Hello and good morning on this May 23rd, 2004. We're just under a month until the presidential election that will feature over four major candidates seeking the presidency against the incumbent Eric Nyman. Today, on the line, we have with us    Party Secretary of the United Atlas Centrists, Mr. Kevin "Nation" Slattery. How are    you, Mr. Nation?

Nation: I'm fine, thank you. Glad to be talking to the one and only Bob Edwards.

Edwards: Hah. You flatter me. But really, Mr. Nation, the UAC has come under a lot of fire    not only from the Republican--er, Atlas National camp, but the Democrats and the    newly-formed United Left, as well. How would you respond to these attacks?

Nation: Well Bob, the attacks were weak to begin with, and they're getting weaker as time    goes on. Mr. Ben of the DLC accuses us of having no core, of having no principle,    when that is quite ridiculous and ignorant on his part. The general sentiment in the    two major parties is that you have to either have a liberal platform or a       conservative platform, or else you have no "unifying principle."

Edwards: So what exactly is your "unifying principle?"

Nation: Our unifying principle is PROGRESSION on the social issues of our nation. We believe in reform of the health care system, and progression of the education system through involvement with private corporations working alongside city governments to fix failing public schools. One thing the UAC truly believes is charity and equality juxtaposed with responsibility. Our health care plan rewards good health and focuses on prevention-oriented health care, instead of disease-oriented managing of illnesses.

Edwards: Give us some more detail on Gustaf's plan for America, something that's bound to be a big issue this election.

Nation:  Our education plan does not throw money at public schools, or force public schools to compete with private schools while kids sit and rot. Our trade plan does not hinder our economy through protectionist ideals. Our social agenda gives equal rights for homosexuals through civil unions, allows for first trimester abortions, and looks to study the current capital punishment system in order to determine its effectiveness.

Edwards: That's an interesting plethora of positions on the issues.

Nation: That's the point, Bob. You can't smack a "liberal" or "conservative" label onto the UAC, because in many of our policies and planks, we do not throw support to the tired old ideas that don't seem to work. We have NEW ideas that appeal to centrists and moderates and even people on the fringe--from all sides of the political spectrum.

Edwards: What about your voter base? It is as weak as the DLC Chairman Ben made it out to be?

Nation: Not at all, Bob. The Democrats will soon see their problem of attacking the UAC, because when they do that, they attack our voters who joined our party for a wide variety of reasons. It's something that the Atlas Nationals nor the Democrats want to admit, and that is the fact that we have the strongest voting base out of anyone. And come June, I think you'll see a President Gustaf and a Vice-President Supersoulty.

Edwards: That's about all the time we have. But we appreciate the visit, Mr. Nation, and hope to hear from you again.

Nation: The UAC has barely begun its campaign. You'll see more public appearences soon enough, Bob.

Edwards: Thanks for calling in.

Nation: No problem.

If you're talking about my accusing the UAC of being too vague, that's what I was talking about, nothing more. The UAC platform was fairly vague, and didn't include too many specifics like the Democratic platform. I'm not attacking you for being centrist....it doesn't have to do with ideology. I'm glad you are now coming out with policy proposals.

I was only criticizing you for lacking specifics, I never said anything about your ideology showing that you lack principle.

Nah, this was in response mostly to Ben's comments.
