What would happen if the assassination attempt on Trump worked?

I read about one that happened in June of the election year, before trump was the official nominee. What do you think would have happened if this attempt actually worked, Trump was assassinated, and there was a open spot for the nomination again? I am morbidly curious at what the forum thinks of this.

Cruz or Kasich would have been nominated, and run a Trumpian "law-and-order" campaign that threatened to infringe civil liberties.

Additionally, a very sick young man would probably face life or the death penalty, instead of getting the help he needed. To be clear, I in no way condone the actions of Michael Steven Sandford, which could have led to a political firestorm resulting in extensive civil unrest. I'm just glad that he's back under the supervision of his family, rather than rotting in an American prison.

The kid is severly autistic and suffering from extensive mental health issues. He's the walking definition of reduced culpability.
