Looking at his ratings over the 8 years, and what pops out to me is that, after rising shortly after his reelection, they began to decline again, and then entered lowest point of his presidency in 2014.

What happened that year?

The Economy was still considered to be bad, you had the rise of ISIS and Obamacare was considered to be a failure at that point.

Essentially this. His low point was in November 2013 as far as I remember. Wasn't the NSA/Snowden scandal a factor as well? I remember this costing him a lot of sympathies in Germany, where was (and still is) extremely popular.

Interestingly he improved since January 2015 when the Republicans took over congress. During most of 2016, he was over water, especially since the State of the Union. The 2016 one was one of his best.

I think the Trump’s and Hillary’s unpopularity  helped Obama’s popularity . I still think it would be above water but say we got a Kasich vs Biden election two candidates who are much more likable I think his approval might have been 51 percent instead of 60 when he left office which is still good .

Could Sandy Hook and Alex Jones have been factors?

Obama came in on improving lives of ordinary people. However, as income inequality became to divide Americans again, Boehner was able to rise to leadership, due to poverty going up among black males.

If you look at post-WW2 presidential approval ratings, you'll see that most presidents had troubled second terms, as various failures and scandals mounted and people grew sick of them. What was unique about Obama is that he enjoyed a long "farewell bump" that was the result of an improving economy and two unpopular nominees providing a welcome contrast. I also think a lot of people realized that, while Obama may not have been perfect, he had always brought dignity to the office in his personal conduct.

Largely what has been mentioned before, with the 2014 economy being quite poor and Obamacare being unpopular at the time.

The problems mentioned prior in this thread combined with a very effective Republican campaign to paint the administration as a failure with no real Democratic pushback defending him. Most competitive Senate races that year involved Democratic candidates distancing themselves from Obama.  At that point nobody was really willing to defend Obama's record.

Instead of focusing on issues affecting the American people he spent late 2013/early 2014 obsessing over Syria and Ukraine, and the Obamacare roll out was a comical disaster.
