What happens to DNC and RNC in summer if the situation with regard to Covid-19 pandemic doesn't improve? Sure, July and August is a long way to go, but if major sport events like NBA or Euro 2020 are cancelled/delayed, we can't be sure we'll be in a better situation. Keep also in mind, such events must be cancelled weeks in advance. Any possibility the conventions get cancelled and Trump & Biden will just be declared nominees by party leadership?

If the pandemic goes on for another 1-2 years, what some models project, the January 2021 inauguration event might even be cancelled. If elected, Biden could become 1st prez since Hayes in 1877, who would be inaugurated at a small WH ceremony.

We can't be sure we'll be in a better situation, but it is more likely than not that we'll be in a better situation. For that reason, it is too early to make a contingency plan.

If it doesn't improve, there won't be any conventions. That's for sure. I'd like to think within the next month or two, the curve will be flattened and this thing will be detained.

I would be shocked that the inauguration would be cancelled, but yeah I cannot imagine the conventions happening. The DNC is going to be bailed out since Milwaukee was going to be logistically unable to properly host that many people.

The conventions and nomination of the presidential candidates can be done remotely.  Just have the rules committees of the two parties vote to enable delegates to cast their votes by phone or something.

I can easily see Republicans holding a normal convention, Democrats holding some kind of cyber-convention, and then having pundits say the DNC had terrible optics and makes the Democrats look weak.

we can't keep the world shut down until the then. The entire global economy would have collapsed. Homelessness and unemployment would be sky high

I guarantee you the situation will improve by that time. This situation is already getting better in places such as SK.

The whole point of having a contingency plan is to make the plan before you need it...

But yeah, the conventions can be done remotely, especially now that we’re no longer looking at a contested convention scenario. Delegates can Skype in or whatever and cast their votes. Your big speakers can broadcast their addresses from secluded sound stages like how the SOTU responses are given. Biden can still give an acceptance speech with confetti and balloons and whatnot, just no audience.

The real question is whether Trump would be willing to forego his huge rallies throughout the summer.

Just use the app that the Iowa Democrats used for their caucus.
