The Evangelical community has long been overrun by this kind of exploitation and abuse.

God is a scam that was invented in the olden days by the man to justify their totalitarian oppression of the people and big government intrusion.

Is there any difference between this and e.g. zakat or tithing to an established church, except that their rackets have been institutionalised?

Unfortunately, one of the issues with Low Church Christianity is that, while they allow believers to develop a more personal and less hierarchical relationship with Christ, they also open the door to all sorts of charlatans who claim to have all the answers.

Most established churches seem to suggest donating a portion of one's income over time, not starting the year off by giving your entire paycheck to the church. (Most religions also do a much more convincing job of helping those in need.)
