Golden ages are myths people. Back in the less “divisive times” we were in a state of nuclear war, poverty was more rampant, freedoms were less distributed and present among the people, minority bashing was socially acceptable, and people of then had comparatively more experiences with heavy diseases and weak standards of sanitation.

Even in this current downturn, we can go tweet about having a bad time to millions of people while not getting shunned in our life for breaking social standards. Times have their good and bad now. We are experiencing blatant views of corruption, yet we have the knowledge and means to remove these ills. Attacks have risen with emboldened bigots, yet the pushback against them have reached heights of bravery. Furthermore, even with threats of mass destruction, we still have people trucking on to save our little fragile marble we call home.

The "interwar years" of 1991 to 2001.  Communism was defeated, we still thought terrorists couldn't reach us, the economy was booming, wages were growing, oil and housing were cheap, smoking, teenage pregnancy, divorce, and suicide rates were all falling, technology was booming, pop culture and music were relatively good, and our biggest political arguments were about giving condoms to high school kids and whether or not the president was getting a blowy in the Oval.

In 2000. Budget surplus, great economy that benefited the middle class, no war and no real competitor in the world as the cold war was won and a new world order established. 9/11 and Bush's incompetence destroyed a lot of things and contributed to the financial crisis. We still feel the consequences of this and the failed middle east policy today.

I'm sure America and the world and be far better off if Al Gore served as president from 2001 to 2009. If I could change just one election's outcome, it would be 2000 and not 2016. Actually this should not have been close, given how well America was doing in 2000 despite the scandals of Bill Clinton.
