The best 30 years of music history, most of my favorite artists were in their prime during this time and that's when the best music came out. I was inspired by the Roxy Music thread to share my knowledge about the subject.

I'm ready for any questions

I'm personally not a huge fan of The Band (they're not band, it's just not really my genre of music), so I don't know

How do you feel about new retro synthwave and the variety of associated attempts to resurrect a 1980's "aesthetic"? I for one revel in it, and nostalgia is one of the few great things about living in this current time period.

I wasn't aware of this. Do you have some artists of this genre you can recommend? I'd most probably like it.

With AMAs even the person being asked can learn things lol

I'm not familiar with it as a genre (if it even is a single genre), but there've been songs and videos surfacing under genre names with words like "vapor" "synth", "retro", etc. that is pretty explicitly meant to make listeners and viewers think of the eighties.

The videos in some of these are worth watching as part of the "vibe".

"Palms" by Quixotic

"Tech Noir" by Gunship

"OutRun" [album] by Kavinsky

"Streets of 2043" by Power Glove

This is just a playlist called "The Best of NewRetroWave that I can't guarantee I've listened to

Some of this I heard of/was reminded of over the weekend, some I haven't listened to in a while. I used to listen to a lot of the more instrumental/electronic stuff my last year or two of undergrad, particularly when studying for finals.

I'm surprised Rock was so dominant until recently, but I guess some stuff that I would have considered to be Pop or another Genre is considered Rock by Billboard. At anyrate music seems to be getting worse, there's less Rock than previously and Modern Rock isn't great, Modern Pop is awful and so is Rap (but in the 90s you could find good music in all genres). I'm not sure why the music industry's offer is so centered on Rap and Pop (not even good quality ones) now.

Oh I forgot to mention, I really like Soul music, it's a shame it's totally disappeared. I think the last time it was prominent was in the mid 90s.

It's about 1 AM here so I won't have time to listen to those tonight, but I'll listen to them tomorrow and tell you what I think. It should be interesting.

This just got me thinking, I think what I mentioned about Rock's dominance can be explained by the fact that the US and European music markets have always been very different. I think Rock was always a lot more popular in the US then it was in France, which leaned more towards Pop and Chanson française until recently (in the last couple of years Rap has become huge here while it wasn't previously).

Opinion of my favorite genre: 90s R&B. I'm thinking TLC, Mary J Blige, KCi&JoJo, etc.

Also, what is you opinion of the heavily produced europop of the era.

Don't bother answering this if you don't have time, but I would be interested to see what you say.

What is your favorite song of each year starting from 1970
