Can a Dem presidential candidate ever win in the South again or is the country too polarized for it to happen like before?

It might potentially happen with someone who can increase turnout among younger voters (under 45). Exit polls from statewide elections (governor & Senate) over the last two years indicated that Democratic candidates in states like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas all won among voters under age 45. If younger voters turn out at higher rates, then Democrats could have a fighting chance in many Southern states.

Of course if Tim Ryan or Joe Biden are on the ticket, AZ , NC and FL becomes vulnerable again

A Democrat can still win VA, NC, GA, and FL. As for the other states not so much, except in maybe statewide elections.

By 2024, Dems will be winning TX, GA, and VA. NC and FL remain tossups. Someday, SC will probably flip.

Yes. Virginia is pretty solidly blue by this point. North Carolina is turning blue quickly, and eventually Georgia and Texas will get there too. Florida will probably be more favorable once the state Democratic Party gets their act together.

If one looks at the former Confederate States and Oklahoma as the South,  the last years in which a Democrat won the state was:

16 VA
12 FL
08 NC
96 AR KY* LA MO* TN WV*
92 GA
76 AL MS SC TX
64 OK

*The Confederacy thought that KY and MO were likely Confederate states in 1861, and WV seceded from VA to join the Union in 1863.
