The South West corner of Michigan (centered on Ottawa County) was one of the places that trended toward Dems the most in 2018, as well as slightly resisting the Trump Swing throughout the state in 2016. Same with Sioux County in Iowa.

Can anyone from these states enlighten me?

Perhaps younger people there are less attached to the Dutch reformed tradition?

That just sounds off compared to youth throughout the non-Detroit Metro Michigan being more right-leaning than their elders.

Culturally they tend to be very "proper" people. I imagine Trump and the current Republican party offends some of them based on their values. Not that different than say the Mormons in Utah or the Amish in Lancaster County, PA (both Dems did really well there this year).
