For some reason campaigns and the political ad's that go along with them interest me a lot.  So I figured Id start this thread where we can post certain political ad's and constructively criticize them.

My first ad will be from the 2004 Presidential campaign.  Its a MoveOn.org ad featuring John Edwards.  From a non partisan point of view what do you guys think of the ad?

I personally think the ad is somewhat deceptive.  Edwards is shown as this beacon of hope while Cheney's words are taken out of context and mixed with some pretty depressing music to make a sharp contratst between the two.

Nick, while I'm downloading, why is the "RAT" capitalized?

Pretty effective, but nasty, anti-Byrd ad.  I especially hate the "Then, Byrd voted to protect our flag.  Now, he wants to allow flag burning!"  Stupid amendment; the GOP will throw away freedom of expression for a few election rounds of getting to attack their opponents as unpatriotic if they don't vote in favor of it.

In answer to Nick's question, ads are suppose to show you candidate in the best light and the opponent in a bad light.  I do not think it was effective, in light of 9/11.  The cuts of the Cheney speech were obvious and not intended to make it look like Cheney was saying something else.

Looking at Edwards, I wanted to ask, how do you plan to make us more respected and do you really that you will make us "respected" enough to prevent a terrorist attack?  Respect does equal security.

I'd say a fair, but ineffective, ad.

Not a very good ad.  The Edwards clips used just aren't that great, but Edwards never came across as that good of a speaker to me anyway.  The Cheney clips they used weren't even bad, surely they could have gotten some good dirt on Cheney instead.  Ineffective, not well done.

Assault Weapons Ban

As far as I know, Bush supported reauthorizing the ban.

Its what the freepers like to call us.  DemocRATS.  I just think its kind of funny.  Smiley

Ebowed, Im at school now, but when I get home Ill check out some of the ad's you posted.  Later Im going to post one of my favorite Bush ad's from 2004.  IMO, probably the best ad from the 2004 campaign.

I think that summarizes the whole Kerry/Edwards campaign.  They always had a plan for a better America, but never really presented us with this great plan.

Edwards/Cheney ad:

If this ad ever made it to TV, it was short-lived.  The ad lacked substance, and the quotes between Edwards and Cheney really didn't tie in together.  While Edwards was glowing about there being no want in the US and being a place that everyone respects, Cheney is quoting (note that the quotes were spliced together to make once sentance rather than shown in their full context) an al-Qeada statement.  If the ad was to be accepted and of value, it should be quotes by Edwards on national defense against quotes from Cheney on national defense.

Just another misleading political ad, and a terribly produced one at that.

I think your right.  It never made it to TV.  It was circulated through e-mail via MoveOn.org members.

This happends to be one of my favorite ad's from 2004.  Id rank it as one of, if not the best ad from the entire 2004 campaign.

Whatever it takes.

Hey that's the ad with the doctored photo.  I've been wanting to see that one.

I agree.  No attack, no slander, just a direct quote.

Yeah,  according to a couple different sources the soldiers in the background are 'fake'.

Well, they aren't "fake," just merely copied form a few seats over.  In the original photo, Bush is standing on a podium looking at the kid with the flag.  Why it was removed, who knows.

Hey Modu, do you think the new Kaine for Governor spot featuring Governor Warner will help push Kaine over the top?  Check it out here...

Watch the Mark Warner video here...

One more question... Have you seen many TV ad's yet in VA?  Who's ad's are 'better' in your opinion?

I actually saw that ad last night for the first time.  It was nicely done, but it skirts the fact that they raised taxes 2 years ago by saying they "made tough decisions," but oh, by the way, "we cut the food tax."

I haven't seen too many of the ads for the race though.  I've seen one the other night where Kilgore was showing Kaine was for increasing the gas tax, and at the end Kilgore is standing there and saying he supports the ad.  The best ad I've seen so far is actually for Potts, and it shows a whole bunch of people beating pots outside of various buildings.  Pretty clever and might play well as the race grows closer.

I believe that James 42 and I had a serious discussion of Kerry's defense speech, at the time.  I don't want to put words in James' mouth, but I neither of us could explain the policy.

Also, just for the record, I don't read Free Republic.

Kilgores latest ad...

Not very good, IMO.  You can generally judge these type of ad's by the effect the have on Democrats like myself.  This ad didnt bother me at all.  I just shook my head and laughed.

By the way, hasnt Kilgore been busted by numerous publications for lying about Kaines record on the gas tax?

Here is Kaine's response ad (top right).
