Governor, Associate SCOTUS Justice, Presidential nominee, Secretary of State, and Chief SCOTUS Justice.

Excellent governor, great Supreme Court Justice, good secretary of state, meh presidential candidate. I think he would have made a far better president than any of the three Republicans who actually held office in the 1920s.

I actually read a biography on him lately (FDR and Chief Justice Hughes) and one thing that stood out was how ahead of his time he was on racial issues.

I can't help but feel bad for the guy. He got to do basically everything there was to do in politics. He got every honor, except THE big honor, and he missed it by a hair.
