What the hell was George W. Bush thinking when he selected Dick Cheney as his VP?  I mean, it worked out fine, but at the time it was probably seen as a dumb move.  From a campaign and election point of view, what the hell does Cheney bring to the ticket?

In 2000, foreign policy was a widely agreed weak point for Gov. Bush.  Cheney brought experience in foreign policy and defense policy.

Cheney brought experience, I suppose, although honsetly it was an odd choice. It takes guts to nominate anyone from Wyoming for Vice President.

Politically, in terms of Electoral Votes, Cheney was an exceptionally dumb choice; it added no votes to the ticket.

On the other hand, Cheney was an exceptionally gifed administrator and an expert on foreign policy.  Bush chose Cheney for non-political reasons.

Cheney brought charm and grace to the ticket (he never uses foul language for example)

Cheney was actually a very wise governing choice, which is why Bush picked him.

He obviously was not picked to help shore up support in the mountain states.  Bush had these wrapped up.

Cheney is a top notch administrator and manager.  As has been mentioned, he is experienced in foreign affairs and defence matters.

He was seen by voters as a heavyweight political candidate, and a man of substance.

No, I know people here in Iowa who are so anti-Bush that when I said to them Cheney was from Wyoming they said,

"Cheney is from Texas. He lied to be Vice President."

I simply nodded and left the room. Smiley

No, no. That was not the point. Some bring up that Cheney was living in Texas at the time he was selected to be VP. The Presidential and VP candidate cannot be from the same state (that is, if they want to win that state's Electoral votes they can't be).

Cheney brought charm and grace to the ticket (he never uses foul language for example) as well as a younger person in vigorous good health ready to take the helm at a moments notice. Not only that there was a real danger of Gore carrying Wyoming without Cheney on the ticket. In view of the closeness of the election Wyoming was absolutely pivotal. Good pick, George!

I think the question is less "why did bush choose cheney and the pro-war socons to serve under him" and more "why did cheney and the pro-war socons chose bush to serve as president"

Neither, from a campaign standpoint.  I fairly sure that numerous others considered, Powell, Ridge, McCain, Alexander, would have generated more money and were more dynamic campaigners.

Cheney is a good administrator and a good leader, but as a candidate, he's far from the top tier.  This was one of the few VP choices that was not political.
