Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel is retiring and will not run for a third term. Served since 2011, Emanuel's centrism has not appealed to the left-wing and the right-wing blue collar ethnics in the city.

Is Rahm Emanuel electable statewide in Illinois, or is he politically finished?

Hes Politically finished. He was able to win due to machine politics, and even then, he won by slim majorities. He has no natural base, and has no real support anymore, not to mention how his handling of Chicago was extremely poor. The mayor-ship was probably the only position he could maintain, but, well, thats out the window now.

IL has an economy problem and running statewide, would only worsen things for him

Gov/Lt. Gov: you'd have to assume he would not win a Democratic primary, but don't underestimate the power of the corrupt Democratic establishment in Chicago, where a huge amount of the state's Democrats live.

AG: I could see this happening.

He has a (D) next to his name, so yes if he managed to win the primary. He'd be a Blagojevich/Giannoulias/Quinn/Pritzker tier candidate though, meaning he could blow it in certain circumstances.

He may be able to win statewide given the right circumstances, but that doesn't mean he is a good candidate. People downstate and in the burbs - even Dems - don't think Chicago is run well, so they won't be favorable toward a former Mayor.

Half of the city hates him, too.

He only lost because it was a Republican wave though. Even in a neutral year he likely would've won.

He might be able to win his old Congressional seat, but he'd never win statewide.

I'd NEVER vote for him in the primary, that's for certain.

When he said he was a technocrat, that was his alias as a night club DJ.
