Can you give me examples of how Trump weighing in on issues pushed public opinion away from his side?

He actually managed to flip public opinion in favor of the Take a Knee Protest.

I don’t get how the last two ones count. How exactly did Trump change attitudes about those against him?

I concur that the latter two intensified antipathy toward the President by people who never were going to vote for him in 2020, so such does him little harm in contrast to offending a new group of people.

I think it's pretty undeniable that the Russia scandal cost Trump support. The downturn of his approvals started when Comey was fired. The issue with that is that people already didn't like Putin, Trump didn't make them not like him.

And what about Charlottesville? I doubt anyone who hates Nazis liked them before Charlottesville.

True, but I'm sure the media and far-right could have figured out how to call them "economically anxious" or make the "cultural heritage" argument, and called the one murderer a "psychotic lone wolf", allowing the conscious to eventually not even care. Sorta like how David Duke could go from losing in Louisiana to boosting Trump's base by making an endorsement.

The good news is, once Trump said "many sides", that forced perceptions to pick one side, and one side murdered the other side with a sedan [or was it a hatchback?], pretty obvious then which side to pick.

I agree with you. It warmed the left up to Antifa, though still far from having the overwhelming support BLM has. After looking bad in Berkeley attacking ordinary conservatives they redeemed themselves with confronting real neo-Nazis, and the left rallied behind them when they became the next target in the line of Trump’s fire.

Trump is a reputational black hole who inevitably leaves everyone who works for him or his administration in a worse place than when they started.  A few examples:

- Michael Flynn
- Paul Manafort
- Steve Bannon
- Jeff Sessions
- Ryan Zinke
- Reince Priebus
- Sean Spicer was formerly the top strategist for the RNC IIRC
- John Kelly
- Rex Tillerson
- Scott Pruitt
- Kristjen Nielsen
- Roger Stone
- Sam Nunberg
- Michael Cohen
- Alan Dershowitz
- Ty Cobb
- Trump’s entire adult nuclear family
- Andy Putzer
- Rudy Giuliani

The list really goes on and on

He has revitalized the stature of Dr. David Duke.
