The only similar scenarios I can think of are Jimmy Carter's group pardon of Vietnam War draftees, and Ford's pardon of Nixon...so what is Trump's motivation here?

He wants to pardon celebrities, or people celebrities want to have pardoned. See also hiss offer to NFL players today - they’re famous, so he’s asking for their input. Simple as that, IMO

This is all silly.
He seems to be treating this very serious process, like some little game. He is acting like a child with a brand new toy, and is going around the neighborhood showing-off and bragging to all the other kids on the block.
But then again ... we shouldn't be surprised from the Orange-Narcissist.

Every pardon he issues, especially high-profile or unconventional ones, lowers the shock threshold for when he pardons friends, family members, co-conspirators, and eventually himself. He doubtless hopes that if he normalizes non-standard pardons he can escape or delay his removal from office.

I'm not happy with this aspect of the pardons, but it's the celebrities that have the greater access to the President.  Any President.  Consider Scooter Libby and Marc Rich.

He probably honestly thinks this is all it will take. His ignorance is something else.

Trump takes famewh*ring to the next level and wallows in it instead of trying to meaningfully change a system which could accomplish the same desired result.
