I think the issue with a lot of these guys is that the rest of their lives are so terrible they blow up video games into a life or death thing of titanic importance to try and find meaning.

I remember reading about a case in Britain where a block of flats was set to be demolished. There was one resident who refused to move out, and he ended up decapitating himself with a chainsaw in protest. He had devised some sort of complicated system to pull it off. This was an actual exchange from the police inquiry afterwards:
