My partner Dan is being jetted off to England to participate in a conference at Cambridge University. He's getting quite a number of such gigs these days, while I of course remain on "ignore." To register for the event, there is a drop down menu list from which one selects to insert their applicable title.  It is well, shall we say, quite the tour de horizon of titles. Were you previously familiar with them all? I wasn’t. What's an "Mx?" A gender other than male or female or something? If so, Cambridge is certainly on the cutting edge of social "correctness," which seems a bit of a surprise, given the "fossilized" nature of some of the other titles. Smiley

Sad to say, I personally don't get any higher up the food chain than "Mr." I feel like such a failure in life! Sad

Isn't Herr and Frau just German for Mr and Mrs?  WTF is a "Mother"?  Every land military Officer rank (Lt, Cpt, Maj, Lt.Col,Col) is there, but no Navy?  And this is England?

Is there priority among titles at Cambridge? What if one could claim both The Honorable and Professor?

At a conference in Switzerland, I was once identified as Herr Doktor Professor. I was surprised since in the US almost all professors in the sciences hold a doctorate.

I've always found it interesting in academia how much acceptable titles vary from place to place.  In the UK, being a full professor is a high honor; thus, "Prof." is always preferred for (true) professors over "Dr.", while in the US "Dr." is the honorific form while "Prof." is a bit less formal.

At a conference in Switzerland, I was once identified as Herr Doktor Professor. I was surprised since in the US almost all professors in the sciences hold a doctorate.

This is another cultural difference; in Germany (and, presumably, other German-speaking countries), every title is always preserved, given, and listed on everything.  You'll see mailboxes inscribed "Prof. Dr. Schmidt" or whatnot.  Although it is true that almost every professor has a doctorate in those countries, you are expected to use both.

You ever heard of Mother Theresa? Nuns are Mothers. Kind of an ironic title from a secular point of view, but they are, just like priests are Fathers.

In other news, Dan tells me he chose "Mx," after looking it up. He's far more "with it" than I.

Only some nuns are Mothers, most are Sisters.

So is there anything just stopping some random dude from selecting "His Royal Highness"? Because it sure doesn't look like it. Many of these titles are actually quite important and don't just fall upon anybody.

It was an RAF rank (equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel) long before there was video, let alone video games.

"Mx" is an indication of no gender.
