The GOP is at it again trying to make things more difficult for the common man. This time by removing conservation programs and gutting food stamps.

Federal farm subsidies are dumb. I am fine removing conservation programs when those programs literally amount to paying a farmer not to grow food.

I question if family farmers even want these programs.  Seems to me that artificially increasing the price of crops would hurt small farmers 1000x worse than mega-farms.

Then the mega farms just grow a ton more to tank the price, putting these small farmers out of business and then restrict it on their own to jack the price back up. Short term loss for long term gain.

I question why the GOP is doing this on something as important as the farm bill. This will just get filibustered in the Senate - and that's if it even has majority support there.

It depends on the crop and how you define "family farm." For the multi-generational farms that continue to produce a substantial amount of food, the assistance and protection (not just subsidies) provided by the federal farm bill is generally something that they could not do without.

Can you explain how paying farmers not to farm is a good policy?  Subsidies aren't always bad, but why can't farmers simply decide how much crop they need (so that the food doesn't go to waste in a silo somewhere) and get reimbursed during a bad year?

Or does this only apply to larger farms?

This looks like it's DOA in the Senate.

I hope this passes the House because it would definitely fail in the Senate (it needs 60 vote for that matter), and it would make Republicans even more hated.

They probably realize that their base doesn't care about anything, no matter how much it disadvantages them, as long as it makes politically correct coastal elitist liberal SJWs miserable. They aren't wrong to think that.

During the depression the payment was to increase ag prices. Basically, as prices lowered, farmers needed to increase production to make enough money to survive. This led to prices going further down in a vicious cycle. By paying farmers not to produce, they could survive without further flooding the market with grain. I'm guessing that's at least part of things.
