I prefer Sykes, though she is 4 years older than Estrada.

Crosses fingers for Raoul Cantero, Harvie Wilkinson, or Emilio Garza.

hey John, I was leading the cheer for wilkinson to replace O'connor over the summer.  we were all surprised at the Roberts nomination, I think.  Anyway, now he may be under pressure to find a woman, as we've discussed.  There really is some "diversity" pressure.  Yeah, I know we ought to be colorblind, genderblind, and I don't want to have this argument here, but there is some merit to having some folks with potentially different life experiences.  Anyway, to bypass the argument over whether we ought to have gender- and ethnicity-preferences, and just assume for the sake of argument that Bush is under such pressure, then Sykes and Estrada are fine choices, except that that the former isn't so very well known.  Does the RR like Estrada?  especially given their intransigence over a number of reproductive issues.  (e.g., global HIV funding, etc.)  Anyway, what happened to Judges Owen and Brown?  Don't the rightists and the RR like them anymore?

Janice Brown and Priscilla Owen are tarred by having been filibustered.  The Democrats cherry picked some of the most talented nominees, especially those who were part of a minority group of some kind.  The Democrats wanted to remove them from consideration for the Supreme COurt before the considerations could even begin, and it worked.

I don't know much about Estrada being accused of apostasy on reproductive issues.  I hadn't heard that.

Sykes is from Wisconsin and both Wisconsin senators (both Dems) are on the judiciary committee.  She is 47 and attractive.

Well, I think that would improve her chances of Ted's vote.

I'm just reading too much into his 3rd world upbringing, I suppose.  I think I posted of that very rainy last night I spent in Honduras in the summer of '01.  Learned quite a bit from a very blue-collar Hondureņa that night, and came away with the distinct impression that Hondurans aren't known for their opposition to free condoms.  Then again, we're considering Estrada for SC justice, not Bishop of Rome, so maybe it's not such a big deal anyway.

I guess Owen and Brown fell off my radar, but after your reminder I seem to recall something about it.  But then wasn't that before the "gang of 14" agreed to make nice?  And what better test of how willing they are to really make nice than to appoint a well-qualified, honorable, honest, educated, experienced, black female and let the chips fall where they may?

She's a woman, that's all anyone seems to care about. Now get in line!

Luttig for SCOTUS.

Shouldn't we be more concerned about what's in their head rather then what's between their legs?

JRB is better than any male option. She also has no chance at the nomination.

Sykes is similar to Roberts and likewise young (47).
