The leader of a major Southern Baptist seminary issued a statement Sunday pushing back after a 2000 tape surfaced purporting to quote him saying that abused women should focus on praying and “be submissive in every way that you can” and not seek divorce.

Paige Patterson is president of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Fort Worth school whose Web site says it is one of the largest seminaries in the world. About 15 million people are part of Southern Baptist churches, the largest Protestant group in the United States. Patterson is slated to deliver the primary sermon — a high-profile honor — in June at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting in Dallas.

When is the last time you responded to a topic like the recent "How do you prefer steak?" one?  Could do wonders for your blood pressure, dude.

As the Church is the Bride of Christ, I cannot imagine Jesus giving his bride a vicious beating, or cursing his bride out.  As a Christian, I cannot imagine a man who would regularly beat his wife to be a Believer; such a man is openly disobedient to the commands of Christ, Himself, and unrepentant about it.  He is in grave danger of eternal Hell.

There are two (2) Biblical grounds for divorce.  One is adultery, and the other is if an unbelieving spouse leaves.  If such a person is put out of the home, and in jail, for his violent actions, he has, IMO, become an unbeliever who left.  And I cannot think of a single Scripture that would require a battered spouse to stay with a violently abusive husband.  I can think of a number of Scriptures to support this position, but I've gotta go to work tomorrow.

LOL.
I post a story that made the Washington Post news page, and I'm "anti-Christian."
Ok then.

PS: Members can comment, or not, if they please. Atlas users are even free to say that this "preacher is an imbecile," without being labeled as anti-Christian.

Paige Patterson's disgustingly misogynistic advice to tell abused wives to stay with their abusive husbands is why complementarianism is a regressive bankrupt anti-women theology concept.

If that weren't bad enough, Patterson (a key architect of the denomination's Fundamentalist Takeover in the 1980s) is scheduled to speak at #SBC18 in Dallas in June.

This story is one of many reasons why I thank God that I left the Southern Baptist Convention for the UCC.

This was condemned by Russel Moore and a lot of other high-profile Southern Baptists.

The SBC is not fundamentalist.

The SBC has made great strides over the last few decades to abandon their reactionary theology, but apparently the struggle is not over yet.  This is why I much prefer conservative mainliners like the LCMS or WELS.

Since when are they not?  Aren't they traditionally opposed to dancing, playing cards, movies, etc.?

LCMS and WELS are fundamentalist.  ELCA would be Mainline.

If so that's news to me.  When I lived in South Carolina I attended a Southern Baptist Church and I don't remember hearing that any of those things are bad.  The only fundamentalist thing I remember was that some people were against drinking.  Maybe I was a bad Southern Baptist?

Well, given that the ERLC and The Gospel Coalition constantly have movie reviews, it's news to me that the Southern Baptist Convention is against watching movies.  I think some of these stereotypes are really old and just don't apply anymore.
