I'd enthusiastically vote Hafner if I was in that district. Unfortunately, I'm not, so I'll have to settle for Ricky Barajas.

Eric Hafner lived in New Jersey and was an advocate for marijuana legalization (here), and by 2016 he had apparently moved to Hawaii and vowed to "end the illegal U.S. Occupation of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and to lead the establishment of an independent social democracy in Hawaii."

Also, Celes you mention Cynthia McKinney – he cited her and Ron Paul as his political heroes.

Here's a Reddit AMA he did.

His old campaign page was a lot better. Complete with a Che background, the Yippie flag, and "Drop Acid and Vote Hafner for Congress."

I suspect he will likely hit 20% of the Vote in the Democratic Primary within CD-03....

East-Side Portland (MultCo) is arguably much more economically and socially Liberal than most Congressional Districts within the Bay Area, California.

Although Earl Blumenauer is  extremely well respected within the District as a solidly Progressive Left-Wing Democrat, and certainly a massive proponent of Marijuana Legalization for decades from the Bills that he proposed as a Oregon State Legislature, he definitely has some major weaknesses when it comes to his enthusiastic support for Global Free Trade Agreements, that many of his local constituents see as a giant sell out to unlimited Global Capitalism and the "Race to the Bottom" when it comes to a wide variety of issues such as Labor and Environmental standards....

As I have posted in many other parts of the Forum regarding how the politics of "Free Trade" are perceived in Oregon, although in theory Oregonians should be net beneficiaries in an absolute Smith & Ricardo based economic fictional paradise of "Apples and Oranges", the reality is that even are highest skilled and paid industries are being undermined by MNC Tech companies with Global Outsourcing Provisions, Oregon forests being logged to send raw timber to China to come back to the US in the form of "recycled toilet paper", US flagged International Cargo Ships and Planes having "Preventative Maintenance" performed in 3rd World Countries that aren't required to follow US Safety regulations, rather than in Union Ports in the West Coast....

Anyways.... rant aside, but checked out the Dude's webpage and honestly would be surprised if he didn't hit 20-25% in the upcoming Dem Primary.

Hell, if me and my wife lived in that District we would probably vote for him "just because", and we currently have an adult kid and her husband that live in the district, and a dozen other friends in the district that will probably vote for the guy.

I have always maintained that the Atlas Community overstates the support for "Free Trade" in Oregon based upon simplistic economic mumbo-jumbo, and understates the support for "Fair Trade" (Global Labor and Environmental Standards).... The ultimate contradiction is that many of us that have jobs directly tied to this regime, realize just how much our jobs are being directly sacrificed underneath the altar of Global Capitalism, at the exact same time where we digging our own economic graves....

I dig his platform, but I unfortunately I doubt he wins the primary. Blumenauer is still a solid liberal Congressman.

His entire website and platform screams winey teenage child. He feels the need to put something in parentheses every other sentence almost. If this race was ever near to being close, I'd have to donate to Blumenauer.

Hafner is a Mike Crappo democrat.

By that, I mean he is a democrat that I would easily vote Mike Crappo over.

This

Well sure he won't come anywhere close to beating Blumenauer in OR CD-03 in the Dem Primaries, but basically this is such an overwhelmingly safe Liberal Democratic district, where he could likely run on the Green or Working Family Party ballot in November '18, and still significantly outperform whomever the 'Pubs or 'Libs might choose to nominate and keep the Dem's numbers to 65-70% of the total GE vote.

I would imagine his Political Platform sounds like an extreme "joke platform" for most Atlas posters from the overwhelming majority of Congressional Districts throughout the US.

In fact, originally I suspected he might well be a 'Pub troll, until I looked him up in greater detail over the internet, and now realize he is essentially running as an "insurgent Democrat" in overwhelming Bernie Country and pushing his political platform to the limits to see how well this plays in East MultCo.

Although Earl is considered a FF and Hero for the vast majority of his constituents, and faces no real threat at all in '18, at some point he will retire and when he does the district will most likely select a solidly Left-Wing Economically positioned candidate (As opposed to supporting Free Trade Agreements that damage environmental and worker rights), a more aggressively radical environmentalist (Green) style Democrat, someone who doesn't have the baggage of being "late to the party" when it comes to LGBTQ equality.

Hey don't get me wrong, I love Earl, and he will likely comfortably win reelection against any Democratic Primary opponent for quite some years, but his political positions are increasingly moving considerably to the Right of how the voters of East Portland currently view the major political, social, and economic issues of our times, although likely some more swingier places in CD-03 like Gresham and Troutdale would likely swing Republican if a Socialist-Green as radical as Hafner were to be selected as the Dem Candidate (Even though Bernie Sanders more moderate Progressive Democratic policies would likely have played much better than HRC within these same communities).
