Former Brazilian president Luís Inácio Lula da Silva is arrested in the headquarters of the Federal Police in Curitiba. He was sentenced to 12 years. Before presenting to the Federal Police, Lula gave a speech to 20,000 supporters in front of the Steelworkers Union building in São Bernardo, São Paulo. There were protests in other cities for and against his arrest.
Problably, he will be stronger jailed than free, because since the proofs were very weak, it is becoming clear that the goal of his sentence is avoiding him to run for president this year.
The left will be represented in the 2018 election by the far-left candidate Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), the center-left Ciro Gomes (PDT) and since Lula cannot run anymore, the PT candidate problably will be the former mayor of São Paulo Fernando Haddad or former governor of Bahia Jaques Wagner.

PSB is distrusted as left-wing party after supporting 2016 state coup. Former justice Joaquim Barbosa joined PSB last Friday, but this wasn't received as big news because of Lula's standoff. Although nominated by Lula, Barbosa is very disliked by PT because his performance in Mensalao's judgment. But he had already problems with right-winger justice Gilmar Mendes (who voted for Lula's liberty, but he attacked Lula and Dilma for nominations to Supreme Court). PSB has now Sao Paulo's government with Marcio França, who served as Alckmin's deputy.  França is between supporting Alckmin's as second candidate (Doria left Sao Paulo's mayoralship to run for governor as PSDB candidate) or to endorse Ciro Gomes.
