McCain stepping down makes it more likely that McSally fails to win any nomination at all, since Ward and Arpaio will just run in separate seats, preventing her from taking advantage of possible vote splitting.

That comment section is disgusting. Is being a douchebag a requirement to be a conservative?
No. McCain manages to be a douchebag without being conservative.

He's more conservative than you...

Conservatism isn’t about bombing brown people Tom.

No, according to the Word of Trump as Presented by Sanchez, it's about resegregating them and bringing back concentration camps!

This is called excessive hyperbole. I assume liberalism, in the world of Cactus, is revenge on parents who didn't love you?

To be an ideological purist, perhaps. That and whacking it to Toby Keith.

I wouldn't be surprised if he resigns shortly after the deadline for the special election to be 2018 rather than 2020.

Why do people bother engaging Sanchez? He is clearly a despicable human being unworthy of attention, not particularly intelligent or knowledgeable and also a troll. Even by the time-waste standards of an internet forum it seems pretty pointless to talk to him as if he were a normal human being.

It would be nice if we had some sort of authority figures that could take punitive measures against repeated trolls.

(I know you aren't a mod on this particular board, but the fact that mods label people trolls and take forever to punish them is very interesting.)

I'd say almost certainly.

That twitter feed is really awful....

"*fake brain cancer"

"I hope he opened that beer on the side of McCain’s head"

That's just cruel,  they really need to be more civil.
Oh yeah, the guy who willingly and enthusiastically dropped napalm on Vietnamese children and encouraged and abetted every conflict since is totally worth respecting Roll Eyes

Excellent trolling, works on multiple levels.

I've always found it silly to see people fight over the meaning of conservatism and who isn't one. The definition of "conservative" in the US seems so warped, inaccurate and unprincipled that the term is virtually devoid of meaning.

I'm sorry for McCain, I've always found him to be a fascinating and complex individual, both capable of principled stands and of letting instinct or emotion get the better of him.

We'd probably have heard about McConnell searching around for a recruit if McCain was planning to resign.

John McCain is a real American hero, unlike the orange space alien that we have as "President".

If there is a special election for his seat, I'd expect Kelli Ward to run in it.

This is likely just a rumor.

Let's pretend it wasn't, though.  Dems would be the stupidest morons in the world to recruit Mark Kelly.  They should be asking Ruben Gallego to run, especially in a Trump midterm.  Latino turnout in a Gallego vs. Ward/Arpaio race would probably match that of black turnout in a Stacey Abrams vs. Casey Cagle race.

And unlike Abrams, Gallego has a much better shot of winning.

In all serious ess, I don't get why elected officials in any capacity don't have to resign if facing a serious medical problem that detracts from their ability to be in Washington and has no resolution in sight.

I want nothing but the best for John Mccain but it's pretty obvious he cannot fulfill the duties and responsibilities of a United States senator any longer.

My thoughts exactly. I can't help but feel there is pressure on him to stay on. I definitely feel if Hillary Clinton was president and the GOP was leading on the congressional ballot, McCain would have already stepped down.

There could be pressure on him to stay, but this kind of behavior doesn't seem that off base for someone like McCain. It's pretty clear that he intends to stay as Senator until he drops dead. He isn't the only one who seems to want to do that. Feinstein is another. I get this feeling that they think those Senate seats belong to them, like a personal possession, and that they can't think of it beyond those terms.

Ideally, once a Senator gets to such an advanced age or illness, they would step down and let someone else move up.

There are a lot of mods and we don't always agree. I tend to be in the minority on most things and moderating is no exception. Smiley
