those are modern EV totals..

This is what it would look like in 1988 totals:

Dole: 273
Gephardt: 265

california and pennsylvania would have probably been the two biggest battlegrounds.

in 1988, california had yet to go through it's transormation to a solidly democratic state (it was before the republicans got on their anti-immigration kick). pennsylvania was like it is today--closely divided.
