Incumbent Lori Swanson expected to remain in and face him in a primary.

For those unaware, Pelikan definitely ran to Swanson's left. He attacked her for her pro-gun stances, not being tough enough against ICE deportations and not fighting Trump's travel ban enough.

If nominated he'd still be the heavy favorite in November. This is a mostly coattails driven race and its not like the Republican candidate is strong.

I'd say so. She actually won a majority (over 52%) of convention votes but 60% is needed for the endorsement. She dropped out after failing that on the first ballot.

From a viewing platform 5000 miles away I've always thought something was strange about Swanson. For ages she was talked about as being a sure-fire candidate for Governor, and then she was suppose to be appointed to the Senate, then she was going to run to be Senator....

It's rare for Politicians to not claim the ranks; especially when she's basically had a straight run at two major offices in the last year. She could hate public life, want to pack it all in etc.

But I feel there's definitely something we don't know; and this latest behavior confirms it.

Conventions are where the loony toons rage. Cockburn, the Michigan AG race and now this.

That's very true. Conventions often skew way outside the party mainstream in both parties. Utah's GOP convention is my favourite example of this. Mike Kennedy defeated Mitt Romney of all people at the UT GOP convention this year, even though Kennedy will get destroyed in the actual primary.
