Joe Lieberman hurt Al Gore more than Dick Cheney helped Dubya. Lieberman was a poor choice in an attempt to distance himself (Gore) from Bubba. Al Gore should have picked Bob Graham and he would have won Florida outright. Maybe Jeanne Shaheen to help in New Hampshire or Jay Rockefeller in West Virginia.

NH and WV are two very small states and while Gore would win either of those he easily could lose another state and thus lose altogether. I dont really think Shaheen would have helped Gore win any Bush states other than NH and Rockefeller other than WV .

Winning just one state more would have been enough to get him over the top. I doubt he would lose New Mexico with another running mate (which he won by about 390 votes).

I wouldn't describe Cheney as having "gravitas", but I wouldn't say Lieberman showcased anything like that either.

So neither?

Weirdly they both had gravitas in the 1990s, if you can believe that. Cheney had an extremely strong resume; yeah Halliburton is a black mark now, but it's not every day that you find someone who served as White House Chief of Staff, Secretary of Defense, and House Minority Whip. He was widely seen as a respected party leader who could balance Bush's total lack of foreign policy experience. Lieberman was sort of seen as a moral force in the Democratic Party back when violence in video games was a semi-major issue. I think that, in 2000, Cheney probably did have more gravitas, but it's close.
