From Politics1...

It is tough to figure out what is up these days with former US Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD). Defeated for re-election in 2004, Daschle has recently reactivated and renamed his old leadership PAC. Gone is the old DASHPAC moniker, replaced by "New Leadership for America PAC." He's also transferred $500,000 from his old group to the new one. Daschle originally created the DASHPAC group when he was looking to raise his profile in anticipation of a possible '04 Presidential race. Further, the Washington Post reports Dashcle will be speaker -- "a coveted slot for any 2008 aspirant" -- at the upcoming Iowa Democratic Party annual dinner. Does all this mean Daschle is looking at a White House run or other political comeback. If he's looking for an office to seek, the SD Dems still don't have a viable candidate for Governor next year.

People who are coming off a loss in a statewide election never come back and win the presidency within a few years.  The exception is Nixon, of course.

Daschle is lumped with Gephardt, Kerry, Edwards, and to a lesser extent Gore: they are has-beens.  The party needs a new face, be it a liberal (Feingold) or a moderate (Bayh/Warner).

Ha, Alan Keyes in reverse! Cheesy

Actually I really hope that's just a crazy rumor, because I would be quite put out if he got back in the senate with a scheme like that.

I expect he's not looking to the presidency, unless he's an unmitigated idiot (!)

Instead I think he might be looking to make a state wide run in SD some time in the near future, but for what?

There are plenty of presidential candidates that couldn't win their own state. Al Gore, Mitt Romney, maybe Wesley Clark, maybe Guiliani.

And Gore is the only one in recent memory to fail to accomplish that task.

Daschle doesn't have a chance which is almost a shame. I don't think he's a bad candidate compared to some who'll be there in 2008. Hey, it gives you an idea of what we're up against in 08'.

Do you think he'd be foolish enough to challenge Johnson in the primary?  If so, this guy wants to be in the Senate more badly than Erskine Bowles.
